Faecal Calprotectin

Faecal calprotectin is a non-invasive biomarker assay used to assess intestinal inflammation in canine patients. Calprotectin is a calcium-binding protein predominantly released by activated neutrophils and, to a lesser extent, monocytes/macrophages during mucosal inflammation. Elevated faecal calprotectin concentrations are associated with neutrophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract and can help differentiate inflammatory gastrointestinal disease from non-inflammatory causes such as dietary indiscretion, stress-related diarrhoea, or transient enteropathies.

This test is particularly indicated in dogs presenting with chronic or recurrent gastrointestinal signs, including diarrhoea, vomiting, weight loss, or hyporexia. It provides an objective measure of intestinal inflammation, supporting clinical decision-making while potentially reducing the need for more invasive diagnostics such as endoscopy or biopsy. Serial measurements may also be useful for monitoring disease progression and response to therapeutic

Results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical history, physical examination findings, and other diagnostic investigations.
